Having an Invisalign Treatment is a great way of discreetly getting straighter teeth without the bulky metal braces in your mouth. However, it can be hard to get the best results fast.
One of the perks of having the Invisalign Treatment is that the aligners are removable. However, this can be a hindrance! You must resist the temptation to remove your Invisalign braces and commit to the treatment. Removing them often will slow the process down; your teeth will automatically start to move into their original position if your aligner is removed for a long period of time.
Ensure you are wearing the aligner for at least 20 hours in the day – yes that is the majority of the day! This allows a few hours to remove them to eat and drink. To get that full 20 hours you will need to wear them when you are asleep. In fact, this is the easiest part of the day to wear them as you won’t be eating or talking. Failure to wear them for the majority of the day will cause more discomfort when you do put them back in.
Brushing your teeth twice daily should be normal for everyone. However, if you have Invisalign braces you should learn to also brush your teeth after eating and drinking, this will prevent your aligners from becoming stained, keeping them translucent and discreet.
If you are a regular tea or coffee drinker, you may want to try and change your habits to ensure you can wear the aligners for as long as possible during the day. We know this becomes difficult when you need your coffee fix every few hours of the day. However, aligners will become stained by these types of drinks, and that is why you must take them out, have your drink and then brush your teeth.
There is a thing called too much cleaning especially if you are using extremely abrasive cleaners. Don’t leave them in mouthwash or use toothpaste on them as they can affect the transparency of the aligners – which is one of the best benefits of getting Invisalign in the first place. Just use warm water (don’t use hot water as this will cause warping), mild soap and a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your aligners, that’s all you need to do.
Whenever you aren’t wearing your aligners it is best to keep them in the case. This is because it’s easy to forget where you have put them, especially as they are translucent. Losing your aligners also leads to broken aligners, misplacing them and accidentally putting something heavy on top of them is a very common mistake.
As dentists in Leicester, we suggest you keep your old aligners even when you have moved on to the next set. This is because if you do lose or break your current set, you have an emergency spare to fall back on. Make sure you clean your old sets before they get stored away.
