A dental crown is a custom-made cap that is bonded to the healthy part of an existing tooth. The crown reconstructs the same form as the original tooth and repairs damage caused by decay or breakage for comfortable eating and a healthy smile.
Dental crowns can be fabricated from ceramic as well as gold or non-precious metal alloys as well as natural-colour material such as porcelain or resin. Crowns made from these materials can be virtually invisible for a self-confident smile.
A crown treatment generally takes two appointments to complete.
On your first visit, your dentist will start by numbing the area around the tooth to be treated to minimise discomfort. The damaged sections of the tooth are then removed leaving only the healthy part. The remaining part is then reshaped in preparation to receive the new crown. We will then take impressions of your teeth to ensure the new crown has a precise fit and a natural shape. A temporary crown may be fitted while the permanent crown is being prepared.
The dental lab will make your new bespoke crown in a few days.
During your next visit, your dentist will make sure your new crown fits correctly on your tooth. Once the shape and appearance have been verified, the crown is permanently bonded onto the tooth.
Your new crown restores the form and function of damaged or decayed teeth, improves your oral health and can enhance your smile.
Dental crowns are typically a long-lasting treatment to repair damaged teeth, lasting up to 15 years or more.
