Myths About Root Canals

Root canal treatment is one of those procedures where we hear many horror stories. My friend had root canal treatment and passed out, the pain is unbearable, I’d much rather have it taken out. However, the reality is very different to the myths about root canal.

There are a number of untrue preconceptions associated with the treatment of root canal. While a lot of people would prefer tooth extraction or to try and wait it out the reality is a lot less nerving. We do understand many people can find this a nerve-racking and uneasy procedure and so we will explain the myths associated with the procedure.

Root Canal Myths

1. The pain is unbearable – with ever evolving methods and technology you will not feel any more pain than you would if you were having a filling. Patients who require root canal treatment will have their pain remedied when the dentist removes the damaged tissue. The pain you suffer before treatment is worse than the procedure itself.

2. It will make me ill – there have been previous reports that root canal treatment will cause illness and ailments in other parts of the body. This is simply untrue. This research was conducted almost a century ago when medical knowledge was a lot more limited. The theories of these reports have been disproved and there has been no evidence linking root canal treatment to illnesses in other parts of the body.

3. Tooth extraction is a far better option – it is wise to try and hang on to your natural teeth as long as possible. While implants have accelerated greatly in their aesthetic and practical capabilities they are still no direct replacement for your natural teeth. The function of your natural teeth cannot be fully replaced and it is wise to try and retain them as long as possible. Root canal treatment maintains the life of your teeth and has been known to last a lifetime.

What is a Root Canal?

Root canal procedures are seen by many as an extremely painful procedure with many side effects and it would be far easier to just have the tooth extracted. However, in reality this is far from the truth. Effective root canal treatment ensures minimal pain is suffered and eases the pain of dealing with a bad tooth. There are also no credible links between root canal treatment and illnesses in other parts of the body. People may believe that tooth extraction is a better alternative. This is not the answer.
