Colgate Vs Aquafresh Vs Oral B: The History Of Toothpaste

We can all agree on one thing, good oral hygiene and healthy teeth and gums is a necessity, right? From both a physical and mental perspective the importance of healthy teeth and a great smile must not be underestimated. Not only can it lead to a healthier body but also from a mental point of view, good oral hygiene can provide you with great confidence within yourself. So, when it comes to maintaining that great smile it is only normal to want to use the best products and practices for your oral hygiene. Be it the toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash or floss we use, they are all extremely beneficial. Read on to learn about a brief history of toothpaste as we know it.

Long before conventional toothpaste was founded, civilisations such as the Egyptians and Romans used variations that would involve various crushed up ingredients that may have even included bones, more of a powder than paste. Toothpaste as we know it came into production much later, thought to be around the 19th century. By 1900, pastes that consisted of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda were advised to be used with toothbrushes. Containing a variety of ingredients such as calcium fluoride, the idea of pre-made pastes stored in collapsible tubes soon grew in popularity and by the middle of the 20th century far surpassed the popularity of tooth powder.

Colgate

Colgate was first sold as an oral hygiene product in 1873, founded by William Colgate. Originally sold in glass jars, it was the first company to introduce collapsible tubes to store toothpaste. It is commonly viewed as one of the most popular brands for oral hygiene products, thought to account for a large proportion of household purchases.

Oral B

Oral B produce a wide range of oral hygiene products that include paste, brushes and mouthwashes. It first came into business with the invention of the Hutson toothbrush in 1950. It is now owned by Procter & Gamble.

Aquafresh

Aquafresh does not possess such a historic founding. It was introduced in 1979, produced by healthcare producer GlaxoSmithKline. The unique red, white and blue striped toothpaste certainly makes it distinctive!
