Getting over Dentist Anxiety
Having dentist anxiety is one of the most common worries among people across the world. Some people have general fear when going to the dentist; however, some people have a recognised phobia of the dentist. Here at Thurmaston Dental, we have come up with a few tips to get over mild anxiety.
Talk to us
Talking to your dentist will honestly lift the weight off your shoulders, and it is the first step to getting over your fear, we don’t bite, it’s actually the patient biting us in most cases. If your dentist can pinpoint where your anxiety is coming from they can help ease it as much as possible.
Breathe!
It sounds silly, be sure to sort out your breathing. Taking deep breaths and focussing the mind on breathing will distract you from worrying about the dentist. Just inhale through your nose slowly counting to 3, then exhale for 3 seconds.
Distraction
Bring something that you know will distract you whether it is listening to music through earphones or a Rubix Cube. Maybe even having a chat will distract you; find out what works for you as everyone is different.
Having a Phobia of the Dentist
If you have more severe anxiety when going to the dentist, up to the point where you’re cancelling appointments, then you might find that you actually have a phobia of the dentist.
Counselling
The first step to getting over your phobia is to go to counselling to get to the cause of your anxiety. Counselling is on the NHS to help hundreds of people up and down the UK, many people have sought help to get over their phobias and you can too!
Sedation
Having patients sedated is not a preferred course of treatment when dealing with patients; however, with severe phobias, it can give you a chance to visit the dentist without worry. There are many different types of sedation available from tablets to injections.
